The Second Age - The Gathering

The Ages

Words come and words flow…their combination often providing legends and myths that are based on their placement. But as it is said now, and as it is said always, all stories have been told...they are just waiting for their age to walk again…

The watchers and warders gathered to the tree. As their namesakes stated, they set about their tasks. The watchers nurtured and the warders guarded. But it wasn’t long before the warders grew restless. They paced about the tree and covered the lands of its shade, but they grew sad as they questioned their existence.

The tree grew to the heavens, its limbs growing weary with laden fruit. A few of its burdened limbs arched to the earth, but not one fruit was yielded to the ground.

…The boy lay curled with his blanket, its softness caressing his cheek. Many images circled about his mind, but never descending to the forefront of his dreams. Numerous picture books lay scattered about the foot of his bed. The books never heeding the call of the mother to be put back…

…The shadow still knelt and leaned to the ear of the boy. Its breath enveloping his face, causing twitches and ticks to appear as it flowed down the course of the sleeping form. The shadow whispered its acid filled words and the boy trembled and turned about…

The branches of the tree shook with such an intensity that a single limb broke and fell to the ground. As it stuck the earth, it burst into flame, leaving one single unmarred fruit laying in the soft wind blown grass.

The watchers walked and the warders ran, and they ran because, perhaps, this was the first day of their fate. The watchers arrived first and gathered in a circle about the fruit. One single watcher gathered the fruit and held it to an eye. He beheld many images about its swirling internal mists. The images showed him places and people not of this realm, and in that moment, in that instant he understood. As with all understanding he pronounced himself protector and guardian. He named himself Ga-shadin…

Other watchers approached and held the fruit to their eyes, but their vision yielded nothing, except its rough, pitted, solid surface. The Ga-shadin motioned to the newly arrived warders and took a few aside as he painted pictures before their eyes. Filling their heads with images and causing them to look to the skies.

Ga-shadin walked away from the shadow of the tree and placed the fruit again to the soft grass of the lands. This time the grass turned to a rosy-purple color as it extended in a large circle about the fruit. In the circle, in the color-changed grass, the fruit turned color. Its shade matched the color of the night when the chariots of the sun descended across the mountains to the West. Ga-shadin motioned to his selected warders and they begun their task…

In time, in days, a tower arose encompassing the colored grass and blocking all from site behind its rough stone hewn walls.

…The shadow saw through the dream eyes of the boy and grew angry with the tower. Its anger reflected unto the child who began coughing and growing pale. But as with all things that go bump-in-the-night, the oncoming morning dispelled the rigors of the dark, and the boy awoke rubbing sleep from his eyes…

Perhaps in this time in this age the word Ga-shadin could be the word for a god. Perhaps in our time and in age it is, but as it is said now, and as it is said always, all stories have been told and they are waiting for the correct age to tell its tale. Perhaps this is true as we wait for theage of the traveler to walk again…
