I'm not familiar with the original game (1988) but I've played Fallout 1,2,3 and this game looks pretty good.
There is currently paid beta. Not going to shell out $60 for it but the finished product should be around $25 which is much more compelling. They say there is about 30% of the game accessible and all the components of the engine are done.
They work on improving the GUI and content.
Also the reviews are very positive.

I played the original Wasteland and it was incredible. This sequel definitely looks promising as well. I would have backed the game (via kick-starter) but there are currently no plans to make a Mac version

Can't you just run a virtual windows machine inside the OS X or set up a dual boot?

I've experimented with Wineskin Wrappers and they work well. If I do get to play Wasteland 2, I'll probably have to wait for a wrapper to come out.
